Direct mail is an English term for advertising products through direct and personal approach of potential customers. (2)

Direct marketing
In the Hoekstra and Miller's definition (1994) Direct Marketing is a form of marketing with a specific application of marketing techniques and - instruments aimed at creating and maintaining structural, direct relationships between suppliers and customers. The most familiar form of DM is sending by post addressed advertising. (3)

Double Opt-in
Double opt-in means that the student gives permission to receive career-related emails and electronic registration is actually confirmed via the association. The student has clicked on a link in the confirmation email of the association to validate his or her account and gives explicit permission to send career-related emails.

Emailing
An electronic mail message consists of two components, the message header, and the message body, which is the email's content.
The message header should include at least the following fields:
• From: The e-mail address, and optionally the name of the sender. In many e-mail clients not changeable except through changing account settings.
• To: The e-mail address(es), and optionally name(s) of the message's recipient(s). Indicates primary recipients (multiple allowed), for secondary recipients use Cc: and Bcc (Blind addresses).
• Subject: A brief summary of the contents of the message.
• Date: The local time and date when the message was written. Like the From: field, many email clients fill this in automatically.

Email marketing
Email marketing is a form of direct marketing by e-mail used for commercial or fund-raising messages to send to a target audience. In the broadest sense, every e-mail that is sent to a potential or current customer can be perceived as email marketing, but this term is normally used to refer to: (2)

  • Sending e-mails with the aim of improving the relationship between a company with its current or old customers, increase customer loyalty and increase repeat purchases.
  • Sending e-mails with the aim to attract new customers or to convince old customers to buy something immediately.
  • Adding advertisements in e-mails sent by other companies to your customers for a certain payment or reward.

Email marketing software
Email Marketing Software refers to a computer application which provides the ability to send bulk email to target audiences. The intent is usually to send newsletters or promotional materials to opt-in lists of subscribers. The software typically includes a database that stores contact information, campaign statistics, and message history.
The interface provides features necessary to run an email campaign, such as message sending, contact entry, contact importing, and reporting.

Response measurement
Measuring the effectiveness of the email sent to recipients. This may include an overview of the number of emails sent, the number of emails received, the number of emails opened, the number of times one clicks on a link in the email etc.

Employer branding
Employer branding is obtaining and maintaining a positive, preferably unique position as an employer in the mindset of current and potential employees and their influencers on the basis of the identity of the employer. (4)

Faculty association
Synonymous with study association but different from a student or fraternity association. A study association is the Dutch name for an association of students who study the same study field or (sometimes) of students who study in the same faculty or department. (2)

Opt-in
The opt-in system is a widely accepted system for large-scale transmission of (often periodic) e-mail or SMS messages. It means that each recipient must give prior consent for the transmission of the e-mail or text message. Normally this is done by a person who puts the e-mail address or phone number in a registration form on a website, or because someone "subscribes" to a newsletter by sending an email with written permission. Opt-out
The right to resist in receiving emails. If the processing of personal data for direct marketing purposes the right of resistance is absolute. This means that the resistance of the person must always (without further consideration) be honoured. Database marketing does not only include mailing addresses and use of address resources (whether or not third parties) but also analysis of data captured and segmentation on the basis of linking information from different sources. In addition, the opposition may also cover certain processing or parts thereof, such as provision of information to a third party or linking data for a particular purpose. This possibility of resistance is offered in every email sent through the "unsubscribe" button by which the student no longer receives emails. (3)

Student (fraternity) association
A student (fraternity) association which, in contrast to a study association aims at offering students a nicer time during their studies. With the help of a student (fraternity) association it is easier to contact other students of other disciplines and ages. This could lead to assistance in finding a room in a house, help in support with the study, a job or internship.

Student magazine
A magazine, published by an study association or editors of the higher institution or university with the aim of informing the student of the institution on study related issues and more.

Study Association
Synonymous with faculty association. A study association is the Dutch name for an association of students who study the same study field or (sometimes) of students who study in the same faculty or department. The purpose of a study association is learning new skills to improve in the study and improve sharing of knowledge and experience with fellow students who study the same field (or a related study). (2)
